Sustainability as an Economic Advantage

Better outcomes for seafood, businesses,
and the environment

In live seafood logistics, sustainability and profitability are closely connected. Every animal lost during transport represents wasted food, lost revenue, and resources spent without creating value.

DistanSea is developing water-treatment solutions that help live seafood remain healthy for longer during transport and holding. By controlling ammonia and supporting more stable water conditions, our technology is designed to reduce losses, increase transport efficiency, and lower the environmental impact of delivering live seafood.

Reduced Waste. Higher Yield.

Mortality during transport and holding affects the entire value chain. It reduces the amount of seafood available for sale while wasting the water, energy, feed, packaging, labor, and transportation invested in each animal.

DistanSea helps operators maintain better water quality throughout the journey, with the potential to:

  • Reduce mortality during transport and holding

  • Deliver more animals alive and in marketable condition

  • Extend the practical holding and distribution window

  • Reduce product losses and rejected shipments

  • Generate more revenue from the same harvested biomass

The result is a straightforward sustainability principle: use fewer resources for every kilogram of seafood successfully delivered and sold.

Improved Animal Welfare

Water quality can deteriorate rapidly in closed transport systems. Ammonia accumulates continuously as animals metabolize, while oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH, temperature, and stocking density all influence their condition.

DistanSea’s ART technology selectively removes ammonia from saline water, helping reduce one of the principal sources of water-quality stress during transport and holding.

More stable conditions can support:

  • Reduced exposure to ammonia

  • Lower transport-related stress

  • Improved vitality upon arrival

  • Better conditions across longer journeys

  • Greater resilience when delays or logistical disruptions occur

Our objective is not simply to keep seafood alive. It is to help it arrive in better condition.

Lower Carbon Intensity

Many live-seafood supply chains rely on relatively low transport densities, multiple logistics stages, or costly contingency measures. When mortality is high, the environmental footprint of the animals that reach the market increases further.

By extending the safe transport window and enabling operators to explore higher shipment densities, DistanSea can help improve logistics efficiency through:

  • More seafood transported per shipment

  • Fewer shipments required for the same delivered volume

  • Reduced losses throughout the supply chain

  • Fewer intermediate holding stations and handoffs

  • Greater flexibility to use more efficient transport routes

  • The potential to replace air freight with transport by truck or ship on suitable routes

Replacing air freight with road or sea transport could reduce transport-related carbon emissions by up to 90%, depending on the route, shipment configuration, vehicle utilization, and transport mode. By allowing live seafood to remain in transit safely for longer, DistanSea could make this transition possible for routes where air freight is currently the only practical option.

Designed for Reuse

DistanSea’s sustainability approach extends to the treatment material itself. ART uses proprietary ammonia-selective beads designed to be collected and regenerated rather than treated as single-use consumables.

Through the Regen-ART process, used beads can be restored for additional operating cycles. This circular service model is intended to:

  • Reduce material consumption

  • Minimize operational waste

  • Lower the need for repeated replacement

  • Improve lifecycle economics

  • Maintain control over regeneration quality and performance

This makes sustainability part of the product’s operating model—not an additional feature.

Sustainability That Strengthens the Business Case

Environmental improvements are most likely to scale when they also create measurable commercial value. DistanSea’s technology is designed to help customers increase the proportion of harvested seafood that reaches the market, improve shipment utilization, and reduce avoidable losses.

For seafood producers, exporters, logistics operators, and holding facilities, this can translate into:

  • Higher saleable yield

  • Lower mortality-related losses

  • Better use of transport capacity

  • Greater operational flexibility

  • Improved consistency and customer satisfaction

Building the Evidence

We are validating the environmental and commercial impact of our technology through research, controlled testing, and pilots with industry partners.

As DistanSea progresses toward commercialization, we intend to quantify key performance indicators such as:

  • Mortality reduction

  • Increase in saleable biomass

  • Shipment-density improvement

  • Reduction in shipments and handoffs

  • Material reuse across regeneration cycles

  • Estimated carbon emissions per kilogram delivered

This evidence-based approach will allow us and our partners to evaluate sustainability improvements under real operating conditions.
